Transforming Communities With Hope, Life And Truth
As part of Vela VKE’s endeavor to assist the communities within which we operate, the Durban office has recently committed their support to the CrossRoad HIV/AIDS prevention strategy program in schools.
The program focuses on training teachers from senior primary school in Umlazi, Kwa Mashu and Inanda in the ”Life at the Crossroads” curriculum, which assists them in making better personal choices and so helps them to educate the youngsters in their care.
The program is presently operating in 38 classes in 24 schools, involving over 2,500 learners. The crossroads teams visit these schools on a weekly basis, involving the teachers in order to provide encouragement and to monitor progress in the learners' behavior.
CROSSROADS focuses on change through character development; rather than modifying negative behavior of young people, education and character training, with a spiritual emphasis, are used to address issues such as values, morals and good decision-making.
Learners are encouraged to discuss their lessons with their parents, thus encouraging better parenting skills and character development. Peer groups also meet to lessons learnt and the learners develop projects within their own communities to meet a particular need, or to reach out to younger students.
